I'm just a guy that loves making people happy and is highly addicted to burgers

Oh, and occasionally I capture the beauty of the world with my Canon 7D Mark II.

I've always had a thing for people. How they think, feel and act. And nothing gives me greater joy than to make them happy. That's why I consider it as my mission to create digital products that people love. Like everyone, I had my own share of ups and downs, developing who I am and what I stand for. So let me share my story because if you hire me you don’t just hire a skilled designer, but also the person behind the job.

An introduction to the creative industry

Bachelor in Communication & Multimedia Design

My journey started back in 2007 when I started my Bachelor studies in Communication & Multimedia Design. At the time I didn't really know what I was good at, except for speaking foreign languages and expressing my creativity with Photoshop. During this time I developed the skills that were needed to craft things, like interactive installations, apps and campaigns. Working as a freelance designer in the evenings and weekends enabled me to immediately put the things I learned at school into practise.

Hyper Island, Stockholm (Sweden)

Life long learning

When I graduated in 2011, after successfully completing my thesis on social isolation of elderly people, I felt that I could grow more. I was only 21 and didn't feel ready to start my job at an agency. Ever since I started my Bachelor studies I already had the dream of following the Interactive Art Direction program at Hyper Island.

Hyper Island is a school that designs learning experiences that challenges individuals to grow and stay competitive in an increasingly digitized world. No to books, exams or teachers. Yes to real clients and projects, self-reflection, group dynamics and leadership. I was convinced that this would give me the necessary knowledge and skills to lead the change and begin a journey of lifelong learning. That turned out harder than I imagined. My perfectionism and high standards got the better of me and led me to a burn-out 6 months later. As I can say now, one of the most valuable experiences I have ever had.

Internship in New York (USA)

Living the American Dream

After a period of recovery, I felt strong enough to start working again. First as a freelancer, but later full time as a UX designer, visual designer and producer for agencies in Rotterdam and Eindhoven. Three years later I made the decision quit my job and go back to Stockholm to finish the Interactive Art Direction program at Hyper Island. This must have been one of the decisions in my journey I’m most proud of so far. I felt stronger and more ready than the last time and the feeling of finishing what I started was priceless.

But this decision was just the start of another dream. Since the program also dictates an internship, I had my mind made up. I wanted to pursue my other dream: working and living in New York City.

The process of actually finding an internship and getting the right visa was challenging and numerous times my dream felt far away. After weeks of hard work, preparing my portfolio and spamming every single agency in NYC (really, there was no time to be picky) I landed my internship as a UX designer at Doberman. The experience of working with the best people in the industry, mixed with the vibe and energy of New York has been absolutely amazing. There and then I realized that no matter what your dreams are, if you work hard enough and believe in yourself you can always make them come true.

Working as a digital nomad (Asia, Australia & New Zealand)

Exploring the World

When my adventure in New York came to an end, I decided to go back to the Netherlands. It was time to use my experience and knowledge in favour of people and brands. Eventually I chose to work at Lukkien, a digital production agency. Here I had the opportunity to work for nice brands like Volvo Cars, Philips, ABN AMRO and Nutricia. After more than 1,5 years I noticed that my priorities in life shifted. I felt a strong desire for independence. A way of only doing things I like to do and combine all my passions in life. Traveling the world was the answer. I quit my job, left everything behind and set out to explore Asia, Australia and New Zealand while working remotely as a freelance UX/UI designer.

Awards & Recognition

I'm grateful that the work I did together with my colleagues has been recognized by the digital industry. My goal is not to make award-winning work, but rather to create solutions that make peoples lives better and easier. Nonetheless, it's nice that the work I've done is being appreciated by industry leaders.
